The terrible rate of attrition during the First World War resulted from the mechanisation of battle due, in no small part, to the existence of steel. This material is the stock in trade of the blacksmith and farrier but also of the weapons manufacturers. The sculpture incorporates the raw materials of coal, limestone and iron ore and it was their transition into steel that changed the nature of warfare 100 years ago.
