Estebaan Cortez Dante - Australia

This sculpture uses a spent and decontaminated mustard gas shell as a vase for the display of a bouquet of forged metallic crystals. The bomb and its former contents provide a direct reference to WW1 and the horror that was inflicted by this newly discovered chemical weapon in the battlefield. The crystalline form represents creation and renewal, something that also occurred within the affected societies following the war. Juxtaposition of the crystals within the shell transforms it from an object of death to an object of beauty and also reflects the multifaceted society that emerged.
